The Mecca

You probably heard.  The news was on the TV, on the radio, and in the Dallas Morning News.  The Mecca moved.   For 44 years The Mecca was a destination restaurant on Harry Hines in Dallas.   It has moved to Lakewood at the corner of Skillman and Live Oak.  This is a big deal.  People from all walks of life – celebrities, professionals, and blue collar sorts all sat side by side and enjoyed diner food in the run down house on Harry Hines.  Now, The Mecca has a nice new home.

The move happened around the middle of August, and Ever-Lovin’ and I kept saying we needed to try out the new place.

Well, we finally did it.

The new place is a little bit fancy.  This building once housed the Molly Maguire Pub.  If anything, this would be my one disconcerting observation.  It is a strange marriage – Irish  pub with country decor.  Do not get me wrong.  I loved seeing all the old pictures and memorabilia from the old Harry Hines location, but right now the decor does not appear to feel at home. There are dark wood beams and beautiful woodwork throughout the restaurant.

Painted glass panels seperate cozy dining spaces.  It is gorgeous.

And then there is The Mecca decor.

On the walls are cherished items from the Harry Hines Mecca.  These items are part of the 74 year history of The Mecca.

Pictures and news reports adorn the walls.

The old signs are still here as is the proof of recognition of being one of the best breakfasts in Dallas.

Let it be known that this mix of the old Mecca with the Irish pub setting did not register with Ever-Lovin’.  In fact, when I talked about it, he didn’t get it.  So this is probably just me, and do not pay attention to me or my strange observations.

Let’s talk about the food.  After all, isn’t that why we came to The Mecca.

It was good.  Maybe even better than I remembered.

We began with a cinnamon roll – the famous cinnamon roll.  It is so big, and on this day it was gigantic – covered the entire 9 inch plate.  It is good, but it is sweet.  We salted ours, and brought half of it home.

Ever-Lovin’ got the Denver Omelet with grits and wheat toast.  He liked it.  He really, really, really, liked the wheat toast.

My breakfast choice was the migas.  They were good, and I would certainly order them again.  Both Ever-Lovin’ and I brought a lot of food home. The servings were big, and the cinnamon roll did us in – if you know what I mean.

Julia, our waitress said the lines are out the door on the weekends, but not so busy during the week.  The Mecca is now open for dinner.

It was good to see a “friend’s” new home.  We wish them well, and we will be back.

Blessings to you and yours,

I liked this lantern that hung outside by the front door.  Just wanted to show it to you.
