Mercy Street – October 2013

It had been too long since I last visited Mercy Street.  I missed going in September, and I was excited to return.  Once a month the Living Stones Bible Study Fellowship, and The Albers Men’s Class cross the Margaret Hill Hunt Bridge to take supper to the middle school boys and girls that attend Sunday Night Bible Study at Mercy Street.  Mercy Street is a faith based ministry that provides mentors and support for children in the West Dallas neighborhood.  The difference Mercy Street makes in the lives of these students is amazing.  I am proud to know them!

It was good to be back.

These boys are so handsome and a joy to know.  The boy on the right is Quincy (AKA Storm).  He and his friends PB and “Little Man” were waiting for us when we arrived.  Quincy is Mr. Personality, and he makes sure we remember him.  He likes to use the name “Storm” because as a wrestler, he thinks he needs a strong name.  He is also dreaming about driving – thankfully for now it is just a dream.

There was a good crowd this evening, and the noise level in the room testified to the fact that all appeared to be having a good time.  Their voices were not too loud – there was just a nice buzz in the room.

Some students are camera shy, but others know how to “mug” for the camera.  Too cute!

The Gang helped serve “Walking Tacos”.  We didn’t use the chips in little bags, so I guess it was more like taco salad.  The menu was simple – Taco Salad (Chips, Taco Meat, Cheese, Diced Tomatoes), Salsa, Sour Cream, Apples and Brownies.  Oh me, oh my!  The kids did like it.

Ramon is one of the Mentor Coordinators for Mercy Street.  This weekend he was a little tired – but you would have never known it.  He  moved into an apartment in West Dallas.  The staff of Mercy Street want to live in the neighborhood of the students they serve.  The area needs roll models, and the staff at Mercy Street are “examples of the believers.”  Everyone I have met at Mercy Street reminds me of 1 Timothy 4: 12.

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

It was good to be back.

Blessings to you and yours,
