Going to the Theater – New York City

Attending the theater was on our “Want to Do” list during our visit to New York City.  It seemed only logical that if we were going to be in New York at Christmastime, we ought to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.  We were not disappointed.

Sweet Mother of Pearl!  The art deco Radio City Music Hall is a sight to behold.  As we walked in we were stunned by the massive chandelier and bright lights.

Gorgeous!

We were told to enter throughout the silver doors.  Now these are magnificent doors.

The walls are covered with murals.  I like it.  I love it.

On either side of the Music Hall, there were pipe organs.  These talented men entertained us before the show.

Then the show began.  It was beyond wonderful.  The precision is unbelievable.  It got to be an obsession to find mistakes, but truthfully – I did not find a single one.   Every foot and hand were pointed at the exact same angles.

This team of reindeer introduced us to our host for the evening – none other than the jolly old elf, Saint Nick.  The show was filled with song and dance numbers as well as 3-D multi-media shows.

Dancing Santas were a crowd pleaser.

The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers routine has been performed at every Christmas Spectacular since 1932.  FYI:  Vincente Minnelli designed the costumes.  Just in case you want to know.

The nativity scene was beautiful and moving.  I like that they continue to include the Christ story in their productions.

There was more.  Lots more, but you need to see this for yourself.  Highly recommended.

Be still my heart!  I did love all the lights at Times Square.  It is a requirement from the City of New York that these buildings have lit signs.  Many of these signs advertise Broadway shows.  I can only imagine what Times Square is like on New Year’s Eve.

We saw The Lion King.  (No great pictures here because we were not allowed to take pictures.)

The “puppets” were amazing and the show was entertaining.  I am glad I saw it.  This is truly a Broadway production!

On another evening we were free.  Far be it from me to let a free evening in New York City go to waste. (This was when we thought we were only going to be there three days.)  We stood in line at the TKTS red steps in Times Square to buy half-priced tickets.  A man behind us mentioned that he had seen Beautiful -The Carole King Musical the night before, and he really enjoyed the show.  When we got to the ticket counter, there were tickets available for Beautiful, and we decided to go.

(Again photography was not allowed at this theater, so I found a photograph to share.)

Oh, my!  This show was excellent.  Carole (Klein) King was a Brooklyn teenager (age 16) that fought her way into the record business.

This gives you some idea of some of the songs performed in this musical.  Highly recommended!  I would go again.

The energy and excitement in these shows is amazing.  It is hard to believe that we were staying within walking distance from all of this magic.  (It was a far walk for the likes of us, but we did it – even in the cold rain.)  Life is good!

Blessings to you and yours,
